We recently had the opportunity to speak with Ivan Fatovic, founder and CEO of Modamily, a dating and co-parenting platform that matches people who are ready to have kids using both modern and traditional arrangements.
Family Is About Love: In 2017, Modamily had 12,000 users, and since its founding, over 50 babies have been born through Modamily.”. I am wondering what the current statistics are?
Ivan Fatovic: Our pace of growth has increased over the last couple of years. Currently we have over 30,000 users registered on the site and over 200 babies have been born around the world. We recently released an app on iOS and Android which has helped to accelerate our growth.
FIAL: Finding an egg donor can be difficult. From my experience people have a long list of things they are looking for, medical history is one of them. Do you have a screening process at all for your site?
IF: When it comes to egg donors and surrogates, Modamily Concierge works with over 100 egg donor and surrogacy agencies that have already vetted their donors and surrogates. We act more as a search service and advocate for our clients so they have more choice and someone experienced to guide them through the whole process.
FIAL: You mentioned that your site is for single men and women to LGBTQ couples looking for sperm or egg donors. I am wondering what the breakdown is currently? How many egg donors on your site currently?
IF: Currently the platform is about 65% women and almost 25% LGBTQ. Most people are still looking for a partner to start a family in either in a romantic relationship, a platonic co-parent, or a known donor. We do have some people looking to be a single parent by choice and we help find them known sperm donors or egg donors/surrogates. Our agency partners collectively have thousands of egg donor and surrogate candidates. We are also exploring having international agencies as partners to bring down the cost.
FIAL: Have you thought about expanding your service to surrogates as well? Finding a surrogate is probably the most difficult part of a surrogacy journey, this could make it a lot easier to find someone, but screening would have to be done.
IF: We work with our surrogacy agency partners to match people up with surrogates. Down the road we are exploring having our own database of vetted surrogates and egg donors.
FIAL: Where can you see this app in 5 years? What features are you looking at including in the future?
IF: The pandemic has made us re-examine some possible features down the road, like adding instant video chats within the app. We’re also discussing matching potential co-parents and donors up using social media and GPS location tracking. There are millions of people around the world who are putting off starting a family and I think we can be an all purpose platform connecting like minded people who are ready to have kids and start a family. We are also expanding our strategic partnerships to include companies in the fertility industry, such as genetic testing, sperm/egg freezing, and fertility Pharma and medical device companies so we can educate our members on all the options available to them.
