As the days of isolation go on, and If you’re like us, finding ways to entertain your kids while being home can be challenging, and exhausting. We try to keep Milo on some sort of schedule, try to the limit the amount of screen time, get outside for some exercise, and do art! We are both creative, and lucky for us, Milo loves to do art too! This is one of our favourite art projects to make!
Wooden Nesting Dolls
We have been teaching lunch time and after school art classes to kids for the past 10 years here in Toronto, and we usually end off our classes with this project. it’s great because it takes a lot of planning, takes time to paint and it takes more than just one day to make!
We ordered our dolls from Amazon and you can use any acrylic paint to paint them with. We bought our paint from our local dollar store.
We usually start off with a printed template to draw on so the kids know what it is they want to paint on their wooden dolls. After the template is drawn out and coloured, it’s time to paint!
Tip: Wear old clothes when painting that you don’t mind getting paint on
We usually start off with two base coats. Once you have all the colours painted on that you want, you can use Sharpie Paint Markers to draw on details.
After the dolls are painted, we usually gloss them with Modge Podge. Be sure to Modge the tops and bottoms separately, if not they will stick together and you won’t be able to open them! Apply a generous layer to all the pieces with a paint brush. Modge Podge is like glue, it is white in colour, but don’t worry, it dries clear!
Once they dry, about an hour or so, they will be shiny and you can start nesting them! Milo made his as a gift for his grandma! They are her favourite animals!
